Visionary Vanderbilt Jeans creator and businessman, Mohan Murjani, envisioned a Shangri-La and embraced classic architecture and Phuket’s tropical climate to build a one-of-a-kind home for living, events and more

    by Sandrine Martin

IN THE HEART OF PHUKET, the Vanderbilt Estate is a Georgian-style English manor that transcends architecture and luxury, hosting some of the island’s most prestigious charity events and weddings. Mohan Murjani, the visionary behind this grand estate, envisioned a haven that respects nature while embracing authentic classical architecture, high-quality materials, and works of art; a home that stands apart in Phuket’s landscape.

NESTLED ATOP A SERENE HILL, just a 7-minute drive from Phuket’s vibrant Choeng Thale area, The Vanderbilt Estate hosts a Georgian mansion that stands as a testament to opulence, tranquillity, and unrivalled luxury.

THE JOURNEY TO FIND the perfect location began in 2012, leading to the discovery of a 12-acre plot of land in 2015. Murjani, recalls the profound connection to the land, stating, “I didn’t find the land — it summoned me.”

TO BRING HIS DREAM TO LIFE, Murjani collaborated with an English architect, renowned for his expertise in authentic Georgian architecture. Combining Murjani’s own experience in building a landmark house in London, with the architect’s expertise, the mansion is seamlessly authentic yet immersed in tropical aesthetics. The goal was clear: to build a mansion that not only embraces the tropical climate, but exudes timeless charm as if it has stood here for over a hundred years. The duo navigated through two completed designs before settling on the English manor sitting majestically on the hilltop, surrounded by its beautiful gardens.

THE DRIVEWAY, adorned with a 4 meter high stone-seated Buddha, sets the tone for the estate’s magnificence. Every detail reflects Murjani’s dedication to English grandeur, from the 30 foot high entrance hall, adorned with priceless paintings, to the acres of lush lawns, box-hedged gardens, and the inviting swimming pool.

THE FOUR-STORIED MANSION unfolds with an array of terraces, including a 300-square-metre covered verandah and various entertainment areas, such as the late-night rock-out space equipped with professional acoustics and instruments. A large professional kitchen, designed by Michelin-star chefs, adds to the estate’s allure, making it an ideal venue for luxurious hospitality and events. The interiors are adorned with bespoke furniture, the finest natural fabrics, and an extensive collection of valuable antiques and works of art, creating an opulent ambience with 1800s wallpapers, classic statues, and statuettes.

SPANNING OVER 12 METICULOUSLY landscaped acres, the estate boasts enchanting gardens, each a unique testament to the owner’s dream of creating a true Shangri-La. From the vast 2,500 square-metre lawn to the Japanese Koi garden, every corner invites you into a dreamscape to relax and connect with nature.

THE ESTATE’S FACILITIES are extraordinary, featuring a charming Lake House, a fully equipped gym, and two kitchens designed for luxurious living and entertaining. The 250,000 litre swimming pool, built with natural lava tiles, water descends from a natural waterfall with which complements the enchanting gardens, offering a mesmerising viewpoint and an oasis to cool-off in.

THE MANSION’S lower floor connects to the Japanese Koi garden, while the ground floor leads onto the big lawn, a park, with swans gracefully gliding in the lake, an English flower garden, as well as a more formal dining and events gardens. The Greek-inspired interiors of the garden floor offer an informal and relaxing environment, to accommodate high-end grand events.

ASCENDING TO the regal floor, the uppermost level of the mansion, guests find the exquisite six-room master suite, comprising of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, dressing room, study, and a breathtaking wrap-around terrace. Sitting up there the first thing you notice is the delicate trickling of the numerous water features, in a breath-taking moment of verisimilitude. The terrace provides unparalleled views of the verdant Phuket landscape, creating a tranquil, healthy space, that is legitimately cooler than the island’s typical warmth.

THIS LUXURIOUS RESIDENCE goes beyond tasteful opulence; it’s a homage to the Vanderbilt legacy and a manifestation of a dream. As the ultimate destination for luxury events in Phuket, The Vanderbilt Estate stands as a beacon of regality, offering an unparalleled experience for those seeking beauty, comfort, privacy, and serenity in a mystical, earthly paradise.

THIS TESTAMENT to the artisanal craftsmanship of Vanderbilt, known for classic luxury, impeccable taste and design, still continue to awe 150 years on. Murjani, having global ownership of theVanderbilt brand, first built the Gloria Vanderbilt denim company, then continued his legacy with this fabulous property. After spending a significant part of his life in various cosmopolitan cities, Murjani found his haven in Thailand.

RECOGNISING A GAP in Phuket’s luxury real estate market, he set out to create the ultimate estate, catering to ultra-high-net-worth individuals who crave spaciousness, privacy, and security.

BUILDING AN AUTHENTIC Georgian estate in tropical Phuket presented unique challenges, but Murjani’s passion, perseverance and attention to detail, prevailed. The result is a stunning property with a multitude of charming gardens, that seamlessly blend old-world charm with modern luxury.

THE VANDERBILT ESTATE is not just a residence; it’s a labour of love, a masterpiece that caters to those who seek beauty, comfort, privacy, and serenity. Asia now boasts a glamorous and strikingly majestic estate, ready to fulfil all your desires – from intimate dinners, to destination weddings in regal style – the ultimate Shangri-La.
